Tweakwise JS Modules Ready for WCAG 2.2 and the European Accessibility Act

At Tweakwise, we believe that an optimal online shopping experience should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we have extensively updated our JavaScript modules Search & Merchandising JS, Suggestions JS, Recommendations JS, and Guided Selling JS, in line with the latest web accessibility guidelines (a11y), meeting WCAG 2.2 AA standars.

This update aligns directly with the European Accessibility Act, which came fully into effect on June 28, 2025.

What does web accessibility mean?

Web accessibility is about designing interfaces that can be used by everyone, including people who rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation, or visual assistive tools.
With the latest updates to our JS modules, visitors with diverse needs can now easily search, filter, and navigate recommendations and guided selling flows.

Key improvements

With this update, we’ve implemented a series of targeted enhancements to elevate the accessibility of our JavaScript modules. These changes ensure that users can search, filter, and navigate seamlessly, regardless of their tools or preferences.
The key improvements include:
  • Full keyboard operability
Visitors can now navigate, select filters, operate carousels, and interact, all without using a mouse.
  • Improved screen reader support
Added alt text for icons and images, plus correct ARIA roles and labels for optimal compatibility.
  • Enhanced visual contrasts
For example, filter count text is now easier to read, even in less favorable lighting conditions.
  • WCAG 2.2 AA compliance
Including new criteria such as visible focus indicators and minimum clickable target sizes.

Why this matters now

The European Accessibility Act makes accessibility mandatory from 2025 for a wide range of organizations, including e-commerce businesses. In the Netherlands, (semi-)government websites have already been subject to accessibility requirements, but the law has now been expanded to include commercial organizations as well.
By making our modules fully compliant now, Tweakwise customers are immediately prepared for this legislation, without having to make major adjustments themselves.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are international standards by the W3C for creating accessible websites and web applications. They are based on four key principles: content must be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.
The latest version, WCAG 2.2, adds extra success criteria such as improved focus visibility, minimum clickable target sizes, and alternatives for drag-and-drop interactions.
Tweakwise follows the AA standard — the level required by law in many regions — which ensures broad accessibility for the majority of users.

Always evolving

At Tweakwise, we are continuously improving our app and modules. Accessibility is a permanent part of that process, ensuring our customers always benefit from the most up-to-date and user-friendly solutions.
